MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Teaching has been my passion since I was primary school and my ambition is to become lecturer or teacher. My teaching philosophy evolved around my personal values and beliefs. I believe that as a student myself, I want my classroom to be happy place where we share and enjoy ourselves learning new things with friends. I believe that such environment will create more creative and innovative learners instead of passive learners.
In my classroom, I want my student to be confident in asking the questions and sharing the knowledge together. I value positive attitude, teamwork and friendship because it is the criteria that will make us achieve target and become successful. Therefore, my students are encouraged to work in groups and discuss the solution together to create positive learning experience together.
I also believe that different students have different abilities and have their own individual potential. They need to have the opportunities to shine with their own personal abilities. So, I will try my best to give as much as different opportunities to my student to prove their abilities in different areas of interest. I will help and guide them to pursue their dreams and never neglect them.
I strongly believe that two ways communication is the best method to teach students. I always try to give examples, exercises, and discussion related to students and their surrounding, so that they can relate the learning topic with their world. Such involvement will boost their interest to learn more about the topic and easily understand what have been taught in the class. Learning occurs best when student greatly involved in the discussion.
To become a great teacher, I need to improve my teaching skills, methods to help students more interested in my teaching and always keep me up-to-date with development in educational field as I believe being a teacher or a person is a lifelong learners.

REFLECTIONS- E-PORTFOLIO
REFLECTIONS-
CREATE E-PORTFOLIO
Creating a digital teaching portfolio challenges my knowledge
and skills in technology. I have limited skills in creating and decorating the
blogs. So, I have to learn everything from the beginning, from choosing the
right templates until inserting suitable gadgets in blog. Actually, creating e-portfolios
require a lot of sacrifice in terms of time, patience, efforts and dedications.
It also gives challenges creativity of a blogger in order to create
informative, fancy and user-friendly blogs.
For me, teaching portfolios is very
helpful in terms of personal development and sharing the knowledge that we have
to the readers. Moreover, blog-walking through other educational blogs will benefit
us in learning process as well as improve our teaching. By creating
e-portfolios, we can actually see our personal development progress over the time
and we can keep electronic material related to teaching. Examples of materials
that can be shared in e-portfolios are lesson plans, syllabi, communications
with students, students writing samples or student works, photographs, videos,
or other multimedia that will help students or other teachers to use in their
classroom.
By creating an educational blog, I
have the courage to explore new technology that I think is difficult and
complicated to handle. Furthermore, blog can be a safe place to keep photos, video,
presentation slides and important documents.

REFLECTIONS- SIMULATION AND MODELLING
Simulation
and modeling is the main ICT tools in science that provide better understanding
and attract the interest of students to learn science subjects. In the first
place, I thought that simulation and modeling kind of having similar meaning
and could not differentiate between the two. Thankfully, from Technology and
Innovation in Teaching and Learning Biology course I now can clearly see the
difference between them. Simulation is exploration of existing models or theory
while modelling allows us to test our own hypothesis/ theory by constructing
the models.
Simulation provides better
illustrations of scientific concepts with the use of high quality multimedia. With
simulation, students can easily understand abstract scientific concepts and
investigate life processes that happen in our body. Stimulating graphic attract
the students to learnt more and enable teachers to show the students the
difficult, dangerous or costly experiments. Modelling using ICT enables
students to explore the models on their own and help the students to understand
the phenomena involved in the topics learnt. Usually, software of modelling in
Biology topics was limited while abundance of modelling software was created to
explained Physics and Chemistry concept/theory.
For teachers, teaching using simulation and
modelling maybe gives a new challenge because it needed advanced ICT skills to
use the multimedia. One of the important remarks that my lecturer said is that teacher
need to find great and suitable simulation or modelling in order to prevent
students form having alternative concept. In selecting suitable simulation and
modelling courseware, the graphics need to be clear and simple as well as able
to grab the attention of students.
Teacher also needs to be prepared and know everything
about the simulation courseware that going to be used in the classroom so that
the information was effectively transferred to the students. Teacher may use ‘Voice-over’
function if available at the end of the simulations as a conclusion to enable
students to see the overall view of what they have learnt in the topic. Teacher was encourage to used virtual lab experiment in Biology topic to allow the students explore on their own and play with the data generated in the virtual lab experiments. Moreover, Malaysian teacher and courseware designer was encourage to create virtual lab experiment in different topic because it will greatly help teacher and student in teaching and learning process. Active
interaction between teacher and students by using questioning will help the
students to understand the topic. Teacher also need to emphasis and explain the
key observable points in the simulation or modelling during teaching process.
REFLECTIONS- KERANGKA ALTERNATIF
(ALTERNATIVE CONCEPTIONS)
Constructivist
teaching practices become the most emphasize topic by my lecturer especially
when teacher seek or look for student’s alternative conceptions before start
the lessons. The steps for eliciting student’s prior knowledge will be very
useful in encouraging critical thinking and science process skills. Teacher need
to ask students for their theories or what their understanding about certain
concepts before sharing teacher’s understanding.
Alternative conception posed a very serious problem
to students since they can hold wrong ideas or alternative concept for a very
long time and they will apply it in their daily life as well as shared the wrong
concept with their friends. More shocking facts are that graduate students also
hold alternative concept carried from their childhood learning. Even teacher
themselves need to check whether they also hold alternative concept or not
since they are the one that responsible in teaching and guide the students from
having alternative conceptions in basic theories specifically in science.
Three steps in 3E Model or basis of constructivist
teaching practice was Engage, Empower and Enhance. My lecturer always
emphasizes the importance to engage students cognitively with interesting ideas
in eliciting student’s existing ideas. Students states their own ideas about
the topic discussed and then teacher were responsible in correcting any wrong
concept about their ideas. It is important to note that how we project
questions to students is very important to elicit alternative concept since
wrong techniques in questioning gives you incorrect answer.
*Picture above showing our experiment of global warming using Data Logger
In the Empowering phase, teacher need to come up
with interesting experiments to facilitates construction of scientific ideas. We
capitalized the advance technology in science using Data Logger to get better
understanding of scientific experiment and science concept. Through Data Logger,
students able to carried out innovative experiments and have more accurate measurements
because it read information from sensors and transferred the reading to
computers. It also will enhanced computer literacy in students and create
greater interest to students in doing practical work compared to outdated
experimental method.
Last step is Enhance where students can apply the
scientific concept that they gains from engaging and test out their understanding
in empowering steps. Teacher provides the opportunity to the students to used constructed
ideas in variety of situations especially in daily life situations. Teacher were
advice to gives questions, projects and portfolios related to student’s daily life in
order to strengthen the understanding of students in particular science topic. After
followed the steps thoroughly, teacher need to guides the students to reflect
on their ideas before and after teaching. This step was very crucial in giving
the student time to see their progress of learning or what they have learnt and
experience before.
For me, using Data Logger for the first time was
very exciting and interesting experience since it will give the opportunity to
students in exploring different features in Data Logger. Moreover, the
experiment can be repeated and stopped at any time. More than one sensor can be
used simultaneously allowing students to do the experiments easily at the same
time. Features such as real time logging and graphs presented simultaneously
with data collection method were very helpful and allow the students to compare
the result with others and ask question to teachers. Graph and raw data that
were generated also help the students to write a report easily and short time
was needed to complete the report.
REFLECTIONS- PBL (SMART
SCHOOLS IN MALAYSIA)
The
Malaysian Smart School initiative is one of the seven flagship applications
that are parts of Malaysia Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) project. The aims of
Smart School project is to transform educational system away from memory-based
learning or exam-oriented learning into education that stimulate higher order
thinking skills and active participation of students in the classroom with the
help of advanced information technology. Integration of ICT in learning
process brought about various benefits to the students as they prepare
themselves to fulfill the Vision of 2020.
In my opinion, Smart School projects were very
excellent efforts to produce individuals who are intellectually, spiritually,
emotionally, and physically balanced as well as harmonious. However, technology-supported Smart School provides
a variety of challenges such as heavy investment in facilities which needed
high costs to provide infrastructure and maintenance of electronic facilities.
One of the challenges that I interested to highlight
here is Smart School hardware, software and hardware was found to be under-utilized.
This problem occurs because teachers lack of ICT knowledge, prefer traditional
way of teaching and simply because they think using courseware is a waste of
time. Without the thinking of moving forwards to face advanced world of
technology and not brave enough to change, we will be left behind 20 years from
neighboring countries such as Singapore and Thailand. As a teacher that will
lead and guide the students, we first need to change the attitude and thinking in
order to achieve all the goals and mission that was established.
Furthermore, greater efforts need to be done in
designing and developing interactive and more user-friendly courseware to
accommodate students with different needs and learning abilities. Teacher need
intensive training and experiences to used technology in teaching process more
effectively.
